Smithsonian ’Asian religions’ project gives some faiths the cold shoulder
A $2.5 million Lilly Endowment grant funds Freer and Sackler Galleries study of Buddhism, Hinduism, and Islam, but not Christianity, Jainism, Judaism, or Sikhism.
The National Museum of Asian Art—that is the Smithsonian’s Freer Gallery of Art and Sackler Gallery—announced recently it received a $2.5 million Lilly Endowment grant, the museum’s largest ever. The monies will “deepen public understanding of Asian religions” by supporting “The Arts of Devotion,” a “portfolio” of projects.
