An ode to the wonderful, absurd concession call
In a few weeks, hundreds of politicians will call their opponents in a ritual that is almost without parallel.
Four years ago, I was one of just a handful of people in the room when a re-elected U.S. senator fielded the concession call from an opponent. Being a fly on the wall gave me both a sense of the operatic nature of that dramatic moment, and it also convinced me how absurd the practice is.
